2- THE RANGERS HOME MATCHDAY PROGRAMME.

The RANGERS Matchday Programme.

For this series we look at the Rangers home programme from the first one ever issued to date, as you will see below there was only one programme  issued pre war, why this was the case i do not know as many club`s, mainly in England were issuing programmes pre war.

The first ever Rangers Home Programme issued was on the 1st jan 1929 to commemorate the opening of the main stand, the visitor`s were celtic.

It would be almost seventeen year`s later before the next one was issued, being the match against the famous Moscow Dynamo on 28th Nov 1945. ( This issue is not an official Rangers programme, being published by the scottish sport`s agency and printed by john s Burns, Buccleuch street Glasgow ).

The next home programme was issued on 1st jan 1947 for the visit of Celtic, ( programme no 1 ). Except for the European games and some challenge games the programme  was more or less the same all the way up to  inc the visit of Dundee utd  on the 17th april 1965 ( programme no 373 ), these were the standard issue`s of the day, eight page`s in total with team line up`s and director and manager`s name`s on the front cover.  Printed by Hay Nisbet and co ltd Glasgow. The programme was priced 3d from 1946/47 all the way through to the end of season 1964/65, however the first 3 games of season 1951/52 were 4d, wether this was a printing mistake we do not know.

The programme  then changed to a 12 page issue on 18th aug 1965 for the visit of Clyde in a league cup match ( no 374 ), being printed on glossy paper and still printed by Hay Nisbet  and co. The front cover also changed to a picture of the main stand,  which lasted till and inc the visit of airdrie on 2nd Dec 1967 ( no 420 ). From then up until and inc the visit of morton on 18th april 1970, the front cover alternated between the main stand picture and  the team line up`s, with the issue v Dundee utd on 13th Dec 1969 being the exception as this was a large issue due to Willie Waddell becoming the new team manager. The programme`s had 12 page`s and were printed by Hay Nisbet and co Glasgow. None of this include`s the European and  most challenge game`s as i am sure you are aware these were large type issue`s. From 1965/66 to end of 1969/70  the programme was priced sixpence.

For the start of season 1970/71 the programme increased to sixteen page`s with a new front cover on each one, the printer`s also changed to Thomson litho of East kilbride. There was a dramatic change in the programme for the visit of Aberdeen on 17th oct 1970 when a small pocket size was issued, increasing to 24 page`s  this small issue continued all the way through to the end of season 1977/78. From season 1971/72 till the end of season 77/78 the programme was  a 20 page issue, and also for  73/74 the front cover remained the same throughout the season.  For those eight season`s the european and challenge  programme`s were the same size as the domestic  issues, with five exception`s, those being issue`s v Dundee utd 16/01/71 ( ibrox disaster issue ), Airdrie 26/04/75 ( league championship souvenir ), Hertha Berlin 04/08/75 ( Rangers news issue ), Tennent caledonian cup 02-03/08/76, Tennent caledonian cup 06-07/08/77, John Greig Testimonial 16/04/78. From 1970/71 till end of 73/74 the price was 5p which jumped to 6p at the start of 74/75, for the new year`s visit of celtic in 1975 it jumped  to 10p and remained till end of season 76/77. 1977/78 increased to 12p.

On to season 1978/79 and  a large type programme was introduced for all domestic and european games with a full colour cover which remained the same throughout the season, priced 15p. Published by peebles.  Season 1979/80 also saw a full coloured cover, this time changing for every game as it has to this day, priced 20p. 1980/81 and 81/82 saw an increase to 30p. 1982/83 to 84/85 price 40p. 1985/86 price 50p.

For seasons 1986/87 till end of 1988/89 the programme was published by sport`s projects , an english company and not a bad programme it was, 86/87 60p, 87/88 -88/89 70p. For the start of season 1989/90 the programme increased to 80p and then £1 after a couple of games, in which Rangers were publishing the programme themselves, also introducing for this season the extra large type that you see at cup final`s nowadays.

From 1990/91  to the end of season 94/94 the programme remained £1, still published by Rangers and this too was not a bad programme. First press took over the Rangers programme at the start of season 1995/96 and remain so to this day, with the programme  increasing to £1.50 till the end of season 99/2000. For the following season the extra large programme was introduced again for this season only, increasing to £2 where it has stayed this price so far.

For  seasons  1986/86, 87/88, 88/89, 92/93, 93/94, 94/95  the Rangers matchday programme was voted the best programme in the country by the Programme Monthly Magazine. Since the present publishers took over the programme we have not won it once. At present the programme voted the best in the country is the mighty Clyde`s, in fact last season 2003/04 we were voted to have the second worse programme in the premier league. For a club the size of and with the support which Rangers have this is simply not good enough.

Below are images of the various home programmes which have been issued from  the present date back to season 1980/81.

PIRATE PROGRAMMES INVOLVING RANGERS MATCHES

Below is a list of Pirate Programmes which have appeared over the years, some collector`s call them unofficial issues, i prefer to use the word PIRATE, as that is what they are.  The list may not be complete, so if you know of any which i have missed out, let me know and i will add it to the list.

RANGERS WEEKLY NEWS.

The first ever Rangers Weekly Newspaper (no 1) was issued on  the 4th of August 1971,  12 Pages for 5p.  The first edition with any colour in it was  issue no 41, 17th may 1972 prior to Barcelona.

Issue no 208 was also the match Programme for the game against Hertha Berlin on 4th August 1975.

The newspaper remained virtually unchanged, other than the various price rises through to the end of season 1987/88.

For the start of season 1988/89, no 842,  a glossy type newspaper was issued, Priced 50p. which stayed like this up to and inc no 995 11th Dec 1991.

For issue no 996, 18th Dec 1991, the newspaper completely changed to a Magazine style format, Priced 70p and it stayed with this style till the end of season 1997/98.

From the start of season 1998/99 till the end of season 2000/2001 it reverted back to the Glossy style newspaper.

From 2001/2002 it changed again, back to the magazine style, which it remains to this day.

The Rangers news  for quite a while now is very much like the match programme,  in that  it  has went downhill in the last few years, it looks good, full of colour pictures, but really there is nothing in it of any note worth reading.

One day we can only hope that the club will put someone in charge of both these publications, who knows a bit about the clubs history, and put an end to the tosh which is being served up every week.

Over the years there have been various Rangers news annuals and also special winter (xmas)  and summer editions.

Rangers weekly news  14 july

Issue 02  64 Pages in all,   Priced £1.95.

Rangers brought out a monthly magazine ( issue no 1) September 1998, £2.25,  and this magazine ran for 35 issues until july 2001 wher the price had risen to £2.95. The magazine was  basically the same as the present Rangers news only with more pages.
